Fifty years ago, a group of passionate volunteers entered a small abandoned building in San Francisco and began to transform the space into an innovative home called Raphael House.
When we first opened our doors in 1971, our mission was to treat families experiencing homelessness with dignity and respect. Our goal was to keep families together to help them strengthen their bonds and build brighter futures.

In the last 50 years, our 100% community-funded model has served over 20,000 individuals with shelter, coaching, and tools proven to help break the cycle of generational poverty. During this time, the adaptable, holistic nature of our programs has supported Bay Area families in successfully overcoming barriers so they never face homelessness again. Even during the challenges of the past year, our adaptability has allowed us to develop new ways to serve the needs of our families during the COVID-19 crisis.

I also invite you to join the celebration and explore our rich history, share your Raphael House story, take a tour of our Residential Shelter, and make a gift to help prevent family homelessness in the years to come. We’ll be sharing stories of impact during the next 50 days and the rest of the year, so be sure to follow us on social media to learn about more ways to celebrate.
Looking ahead, we are embracing a strategic vision that will evolve our holistic model of support to prevent family homelessness before it starts. As stakeholders in our organization, you are truly a part of our rich history, and will be key partners in our transformative success. Help us forge this growth by contributing now to positively impact the Bay Area community for generations to come.
Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to support Raphael House. I look forward to partnering with you during this milestone anniversary!
With Gratitude,
Marc Slater
