Magic tricks, jubilant singalongs, balloon animals and much more delighted the many Bay Area families who came together on November 14 for our 5th annual Gobble & Give festival benefitting Raphael House families. This year’s event, our biggest yet, took place at Bunny Meadow in Golden Gate Park and raised nearly $50,000 for Raphael House’s Residential Shelter and Bridge programs to help families experiencing or at-risk of homelessness build brighter futures.
We are so grateful to our event chairs: Vanessa Welstead and Genevieve Weeks, along…
Last month, Raphael House families got to enjoy a day of fun thanks to our community partners at Pier 39. In the morning, several families, along with the Residential Community Interns, boarded a double-decker bus that took us on a short, fact and joke filled tour of the city before dropping us off at Pier 39. Once we got off the bus we made our way to the docks looking for the boat that would take us around the bay. We boarded the boat and claimed spots along the railing as we headed towards the Golden Gate Bridge. The kids spent the trip pointing out all of…
Thanks to the generosity of our community partners Aramark and other member companies (including: 20/20 Productions, Florin Pensions, Liza Evans Interior Design, LoopUp, and PwC) and individuals from the British-American Business Council, we have a new rooftop garden that will provide herbs and fresh vegetables for our kitchen and educational opportunities for the kids in our Children’s Program. The garden project was part of a larger volunteer service day that was sponsored by Aramark and supported in partnership by the BABC Raphael House Task Force.
When you think of Raphael House, “shelter” is probably the first word that comes to mind—as it should. With the generous support of our donors and volunteers, we’ve been helping families who are homeless through our Residential Shelter Program since 1971, 60 to 75 of them annually, with approximately 85% moving on to stable housing. Amazing!
But did you know that Raphael House also provides support for rapid re-housing to families experiencing homelessness in lieu of a stay in our residential shelter? Or that we offer support to prevent family homelessness that can begin before an eviction notice is served?
We provide these services to approximately 62 families each year through…
When Daniel first came to Raphael House with his four-year-old son Caleb, he came with the dream of providing a safe and stable home for his son. Following a long history of domestic violence, Daniel had left his abusive relationship and gained full custody of Caleb, which resulted in them having to stay at a domestic violence shelter for close to six weeks.
Although the shelter provided Daniel and Caleb with security and services for victims of domestic violence, their length of stay was limited and coming to end. Daniel’s search for a place where he and his son would have an opportunity to rebuild their lives in a supportive homelike environment brought them to Raphael House.
After moving into…
Over the summer, Raphael House staff took eight teens from our Saturday Tutoring Club to Southern California to visit colleges and cultural sites, as a reward for their intensive academic work during the past school year. With the teens preparing to embark on the college planning process, this trip allowed them to explore some college programs and learn about life on a college campus. For the younger teens, who are just starting to think about their plans for the future, it was a great opportunity to educate them on the steps involved in selecting and applying to colleges.
The summer trip for our teens who participate in our Saturday Tutoring Club is…
In August, as summer was winding down, Raphael House held its much anticipated annual Back-to-School event. With the help of our community partners, The Junior League of San Francisco, National Charity League, Pier 39, and various other donors, more than 200 children from our Residential Shelter and Bridge programs received backpacks and kits filled with essential school supplies needed for a successful academic year.
For many families working diligently to achieve financial independence and stability, the extra expense of school supplies can be difficult to overcome. This event ensures that these children will be able to focus on learning without their parents having to worry if they will have access to the necessary resources…
“A Grand Special Night of Magic” at the Palace Hotel raises record funds for families experiencing or at risk of homelessness
Our 18th Annual One Home, Many Hearts Gala was a sold-out success that attracted more than 500 guests on Saturday to the elegant Palace Hotel in downtown San Francisco. Gala co-chairs Melissa Koerner and Laura Larsen and their powerhouse committee raised $610,000 for Raphael House families this year, making the event our highest-grossing fundraiser to date. We are grateful to our premier sponsors Audi and Pacific Gas and Electric Company and to each and every one of our corporate sponsors, family sponsors, in kind donors, and volunteers for making this event possible. And we are thankful for and inspired by the outpouring…
Our Gala committee has been hard at work rounding up some fabulous live auction packages for this year’s One Home, Many Hearts Gala on April 18th. On Friday, March 20th we cut the ribbon in commemoration of the completion of the expansion of the 3rd floor of our Residential Shelter. David Lowell and Amanda Heier, and several Raphael House donors, Board members, former residents, and other friends.
